A Bit of (Bad) Luck…

In 2019 I was working in a civil engineering role to put myself through school and I spent half my time driving from construction site to construction site—my truck was my office. I’d carry a couple very large water bottles, and in typical Denver traffic, when I hit the brakes my water bottle would roll onto the floor. I'd be stuck in traffic for like 40 more minutes, unable to reach the bottle, and unable to grab a damn drink! Pretty frustrating.

But it was just the motivation to find a better solution.

There were some options out there, but they were cheaply made friction fit things with bad reviews. Not a solution. It was time to make my own luck, so I put my mechanical engineering degree to work.

At first, it felt like a long…and not so direct process. Each iteration was closer and offered a better fit, but it took 9 prototypes and ninety-eight modifications to dial it in. It even survived getting rear-ended without spilling a drop.

Discipline

The discipline of design is all about managing trade offs. There are 1,000s of different cup holders. We designed for the most common 95%. For 5% of the market with a recessed cup holder (image below), the design compromises didn’t make sense. This is an example of a recessed cup holder where our design doesn’t work:
